Linguistics Minors

The Linguistics department offers five minors:

Minors allow students to add depth in linguistics to another degree, in preparation for graduate school in linguistics or a related field or for a career requiring linguistic knowledge and/or analytic ability.

Students majoring in linguistics are encouraged to minor in related areas to which the Department of Linguistics contributes, such as the American Indian and Indigenous Studies minor, the Feminist Studies minor, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Studies minor, or a minor in a modern or classical language. For more information about minor requirements, visit the Office of the Registrar.

Adding / Dropping a Linguistics Minor (Current UCSB Students)

  • Want to add?
    • You must have finished at least ONE Linguistics course (a passing grade must be in your GOLD records) before you can add a Linguistics Minor. If you are currently taking your first Linguistics course, please wait until your final grades are posted:
    • *NOTE: Linguistics Majors cannot minor in any Linguistics minors except TESOL.
  • Need to drop?
    • Email us at undergradadvisor@linguistics.ucsb.edu with your perm # and the Linguistics minor you are dropping.
  • Have other questions or need clarification? Please email the undergraduate advisor at undergradadvisor@linguistics.ucsb.edu with your perm #, which minor, and any questions you may have.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE FOR TESOL MINORS: The TESOL minor requires students to have taken at least ONE of the core TESOL classes (LING 139, 140, or 141) to be eligible to add the minor. We will not add you if you have not passed one of the courses listed. To add LING 139, 140, or 141, students must join a manual sign up sheet on the TESOL page to be issued an approval code during pass 2.

Intent to Minor in Linguistics Form

Completing your Minor: Next Steps (Current UCSB Students)

To finalize your Linguistics minor you must submit the Linguistics Minor Clearance form, but prior to submitting the form you must ensure:

  • All your Linguistics minor courses have their grades posted on your GOLD records before submitting the form. The form will be rejected if the grade(s) for your last course in the minor have not yet been posted on your GOLD.
    • You may need to submit this form after Finals week since grades won't be posted until after the quarter is technically over - this is completely fine.
  • You must complete this form as it may otherwise delay your degree conferral. The DocuSign form will be reviewed by the department advisor automatically once you click "Complete" on DocuSign. Please do not email the PDF as a copy will be automatically sent to us already - you will also receive a copy with it signed by the department once we finish processing.
