The first students in the doctoral program in Linguistics at UCSB were admitted to the program in the fall of 1989; our department has thus been involved in doctoral education for the past quarter century. On October 10th and 11th 2014, the Linguistics Department celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Ph.D. program during a reunion event bringing past and present members of the department together to collectively reflect on the significant impact that the past twenty-five years have had on our field and our department and to speculate on what the future holds.
Current and retired faculty, former and current graduate students and undergraduate students participated in a number of activities during the reunion, including a research presentation session, a panel discussion devoted to career options available to recipients of a linguistics degree, a roundtable discussion focused on the state of the field and our department (past, present, and future), and other social events.
