Welcome! This website is designed to help students of segmental phonology understand and identify phonological segments and their distinctive features. It is primarily intended to serve as a teaching aid for the Introduction to Phonology course taught in the linguistics department at UCSB, but it should be useful to anyone interested in, or currently studying, segmental phonology.

Use of the site requires an introductory level understanding of phonetics and phonology; but since it's primarily intended to help those new to segmental phonology, an effort has been to explain some of the basic concepts needed to use the site. Please visit our help page for more information.
