Susanna Cumming, Associate Professor

Indonesian and Austronesian languages; discourse and grammar; lexicon in discourse
South Hall 3523, (805) 893-7291

My research interests center around the functional motivation of linguistic form and the relation between lexical semantics and discourse pragmatics. This has resulted in work on syntactic diachrony, particularly in Malay/Indonesian, and in an interest in aspects of lexical selection in discourse in Indonesian and English. My current work focuses on observing lexical and grammatical changes in computer-mediated written communication, and the motivations for these changes both in terms of social aspects of electronic interaction and technological properties of the channel.
