My research interests center around the functional motivation of linguistic form and the relation between lexical semantics and discourse pragmatics. This has resulted in work on syntactic diachrony, particularly in Malay/Indonesian, and in an interest in aspects of lexical selection in discourse in Indonesian and English. My current work focuses on observing lexical and grammatical changes in computer-mediated written communication, and the motivations for these changes both in terms of social aspects of electronic interaction and technological properties of the channel.
