Summer 2014



Chris Donlay acted as teaching assistant and translator for Jack Du Bois’s graduate course on discourse transcription at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, in September.



Kayla Eisman attended the workshops at CoLang, the language documentation and revitalization institute, June 16-27 at the University of Texas at Arlington.



Pat Hall attended the workshops and the field methods practicum at CoLang, the language documentation and revitalization institute, June 16-July 25 at the University of Texas at Austin.



Pat Hall gave a presentation entitled “Web Technology and Language Documentation: You Can Too!” at CoLang at the University of Texas at Arlington in June.



Danny Hieber attended the workshops at CoLang, the language documentation and revitalization institute, June 16-27 at the University of Texas at Arlington.



Heather Simpson presented a talk entitled “Adjective Order Preferences in Korean vs. English: a Multi-Factorial Corpus Analysis" at the 6th International Conference on Corpus Linguistics in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in May.



Alex Wahl presented a talk entitled "A Computational Approach to Extracting (Dis)continuous Collocations of Un-prespecified Length" at the 6th International Conference on Corpus Linguistics in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in May. He received a Doctoral Student Travel Grant from the Academic Senate to attend the conference.



Alex Wahl was awarded the Graduate Division Dissertation Fellowship for the 2014-15 school year.



Shawn Warner-Garcia presented a talk entitled “BDSM meets WWJD: Discursively Negotiating the Boundaries of Acceptable Sexuality in American Christian Contexts” at the 8th International Gender and Language Association Conference, in Vancouver, Canada, in June.



Shawn Warner-Garcia is UCSB Graduate Division's new Professional Development Peer Advisor. Her position began in June.
