Graduate Student News: Winter 2013

Joseph Brooks presented a paper entitled "Syntactic-prosodic form and pragmatic function: Focus and left-detached patients in Chini" at the 5th Biennial Meeting of the Rice Linguistics Society in February.

Rachel Cranfill was awarded an LSA fellowship to attend the Linguistic Institute at the University of Michigan this summer.

Chris Donlay was awarded a Dissertation Completion Fellowship of $25,000 from The Mellon Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies for his project "A Grammar of the Kazo Language in Yunnan, China."

Chris Donlay gave a talk entitled ????????????? [Modern American fieldwork: Philosophy and methods] at the Yunnan Endangered Language Recording and Technology Training Conference held at the Research Centre for Endangered Languages, Yuxi Normal University in Yuxi, Yunnan, China, in March.

Chris Donlay co-taught a workshop on using the International Phonetic Alphabet with Prof. Bai Bibo, using data from his own fieldwork on Kazo, at the Yunnan Endangered Language Recording and Technology Training Conference held at the Research Centre for Endangered Languages, Yuxi Normal University in Yuxi, Yunnan, China, in March.

Chris Donlay gave a talk entitled ???????????? [Yunnan Endangered Language Research: The Kazo Language] at the School of National Cultures, Yunnan University of Nationalities in Kunming, Yunnan, China in March.

Elliott Hoey presented a paper entitled "Sighing in interaction: Somatic, semiotic, and social" at the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Language and Social Interaction Working Group at Teachers College Columbia University. He presented the same paper at the 5th Biennial Meeting of the Rice Linguistics Society and at the 39th Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society in February.

Elliott Hoey was awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship by the American Councils for International Education for four weeks of intensive Russian language study this summer at Bashkir State Pedagogical University in Ufa, Russia.

Elliott Hoey was awarded a 3-year PhD fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics to begin in September 2013 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He will work in the Language and Cognition Department under Stephen Levinson.

Onna Nelson published a book review of Semantic Analysis: A Practical Introduction by Cliff Goddard in Studies in Language 36(4), 2012.

Alex Wahl published a book review of Allah Made Us: Sexual Outlaws in an Islamic African City by Rudolf Gaudio in Gender and Language 7(1), 2013.

Shawn Warner-Garcia and her husband, Jonathan, are expecting their first child in October.

Di Wdzenczny was awarded an LSA fellowship to attend the Linguistic Institute at the University of Michigan this summer.

Hannah Yates was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for three years of graduate study.
