Course Overview
Introduction to video recording and basics of video editing for fieldwork, with time to practice skills as we introduce them. See tentative workshop schedule below.

Note: we recommend that you bring your personal mini-DV camera, if you have one available; however, there will be cameras available for you to practice with during the workshop if you don’t have one of your own. Since we will be dealing with large video files, we recommend that you bring an external hard drive for storage purposes. There will be DVDs available for you as well.

Class 1
Camera and equipment selection and care, set-up and labeling, compression types, video standards, filming (i.e. camera angles, lighting, audio, mixers, microphone use), capture and introduction to video editing, practice

Class 2
Filming and capture (review), batch capturing, basic skills and concepts of editing, editing practice, backing up files

Class 3
Filming and capture (review), editing continued, incorporating files into PowerPoint presentations, adding subtitles, practice

Class 4
Filming and capture (review), editing continued, dealing with audio issues, extracting audio, backing up (review), extracting video, practice

Class 5 (Optional)
PC mini-workshop (overview, capture, introduction to editing, practice, advanced editing, etc.)
