1. Examines the syntactic analysis and "logical form" of a text (as produced by the "Microsoft English Grammar" or MEG)
2. Recognizes cues: phrases, tense, anspect, polarity, NP form (e.g. pronouns)
3. Posits discourse relations between clauses, assigning a heuristic score to each posited relation
4. Assembles RST trees compatible with posited relations, starting with high-scoring relations
