I am currently Director of inField, the Institute on Field Linguistics and Language Documentation to be held at UC Santa Babara in June and July of 2008. For full information on the institute, visit our website: http://www.linguistics.ucsb.edu/faculty/infield/.

I am also the editor of Himalayan Linguistics, a free web-based journal specializing in languages of the Himalayan area.

Most of my research has focused on Newar, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Nepal. Most recently I have published a comprehensive reference grammar of the Dolakha dialect. I have written articles on numerous aspects of this language; see my list of publications.

Most recently, I have been conducting a study on the syntax of nominalization in five Tibeto-Burman languages of the Himalayan area. Two papers are forthcoming from this work. One, with co-authors Kristine Hildebrandt (for Manange), Alec Coupe (for Mongsen Ao), Ellen Bartee (for Dongwang Tibetan) and You-Jing Lin (for Zhuokeji rGyalrong), is aimed at the Tibeto-Burmanist audience and provides a syntactically-explicit account of a range of structures involving nominalization. The other is aimed at typologists more generally and illustrates the synchronic and diachronic interaction of derivational and clausal nominalization in these languages.

My other recent research project is on Nones, a Rhaeto-Romance variety spoken in Northern Italy.
