Class announcements

Tuesday, Sept. 23

The course cap has been raised; students trying to add the course can now enroll.

For Assignment 1, you will need to go to the Multipurpose Lab in 2160 Kerr Hall to digitize and edit your data and burn your CD. Click here for open lab hours this week and next.

Thursday, Sept. 25

Extension: Assignment 1 is now due Thursday, Oct. 2 at the beginning of class.

One digitizing and editing station will be set up in the Multipurpose Lab (2160 Kerr Hall) by later today. I'll email the class listserve when it's ready. Two other stations will be set up by early next week. It's recommended that you work on the digitizing and editing with a partner to save time and help each other. For shorter wait times, go early in the day (the lab opens at 8 a.m. on weekdays, 9 on Saturday, 12 on Sunday). Have your tape cued up and don't forget to bring blank CDs!

If you record a language other than English, you need to submit only 3 minutes of data (not 5).

Your computer lab access sticker can be picked up at the Kerr Hall Lab (2160 Kerr Hall). No need to go to Phelps.

The program we were originally going to use to edit the sound file, SoundEdit 16, is not working properly. The program you'll be using instead is Peak LE. Instructions in how to use the program will be available in the lab (2160 Kerr Hall). In addition, consultants will be available to help you through the process. It will take you under ten minutes.

Three additional cassette recorders are now available in the Linguistics Dept. office for 24-hour checkout. The office is open roughly from 8 to 4 pm daily and closed 12-1.

Reminders:

  • You must select a continuous segment of about FIVE MINUTES. Don't go more than about 30 seconds over or under. If at least half of your conversation is in another language, your segment should be about three minutes long.
  • Your segment MUST BE CONTINUOUS. Do not piece together multiple segments.
  • Your segment MUST NOT BE EDITED (except to cut out extra material at the beginning or end of the clip to keep it to five minutes). Do not bleep over or cut out pauses, names, or any other material. Do not alter the audio quality in any way, except to make the volume higher, if necessary.
  • Don't forget to make a copy of the CD for me and a copy for yourself. Don't email your five-minute segment to me! For the "data sample" assignment that you will be completing later, you will use the data on the CD to create a very small audio excerpt that you will email to me.
  • Please go to the lab as soon as possible--if there's a rush near the assignment deadline the consultant may not be able to help you.
  • Don't forget to cue up your tape BEFORE you get to the lab!
Let me know if you run into any difficulties.

Tuesday, Sept. 30

  • Recording tip: Turn external mic on (or unplug it). Test first!
  • Go to the Multipurpose Lab (2160 Kerr Hall) ASAP to digitize and edit your tape and burn your CD.
