 DESCRIPTION

This class explores the varied and sometimes surprising relationships among language, gender, and sexuality. Using a number of different feminist theories that have helped shape the field, we will trace the major debates in the study of language, gender, and sexuality, from earlier perspectives focused on gender difference to more recent work that views gender and sexuality as enacted through language. We'll begin by exploring two longstanding debates in the field: whether language itself is sexist and whether each gender uses language differently. We'll then turn to the varied styles of gender performed through language, including how these are influenced by such factors as social class, ethnicity, sexuality, and transgender and other gender-transgressive identities.

This course fulfills the GE requirements for Writing and Area D and counts toward the Leadership Certificate Program. There are no prerequisites.
