This workshop, held in conjunction with the LSA Institute at Stanford University July 3-27, 2007, provides a practical introduction to a range of issues in ethnographic fieldwork for linguists researching sociocultural issues. It offers a set of detailed, practical suggestions oriented to new field researchers and presented by leading scholars in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology.

The workshop has three components: (1) a series of seven 30-minute presentations on specific aspects of the ethnographic process, followed by discussion and contributions from other presenters and participants; (2) breakout lunch sessions hosted by the workshop presenters; (3) a Q&A panel discussion with all the presenters, in which they take questions from participants and reflect on their own fieldwork experiences.

The workshop is sponsored by the Stanford University Department of Linguistics.
