The Himalayan Linguistics fonts are a set of Truetype font typefaces for rendering technical phonetic characters and characters in the Nepali and Tibetan alphabets. They are available in PC and Mac formats. The fonts can be downloaded for free.
The journal uses the fonts for two purposes.
- The abstracts of papers accepted for publication in the journal are displayed on the web in the Himalayan Linguistics fonts. If the fonts are not installed on your computer, you won’t be able to read the abstracts online: the abstracts will also be available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.
- As discussed on the page, to the journal in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect format must use the Himalayan Linguistics fonts for special phonetic characters and characters in the Nepali and Tibetan alphabets.
Those submitting manuscripts to the journal in Adobe Acrobat PDF format do not need to use the Himalayan Linguistics fonts, and the fonts are not necessary to read the papers, which will be available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.
Those downloading the Himalayan Linguistics fonts may use them for their own personal use and they may give them away for free to others. They may not sell the fonts, however.
The fonts are:
- Times Linguist, a family of fonts [regular, bold, oblique, bold-oblique], which includes all the standard keyboard characters – and thus can be used to produce ordinary English text – and special phonetics characters found in the extended character set. This typeface may be mixed with other Times Roman faces.
- Times Linguist 2, a family of fonts [regular, bold, oblique, bold-oblique], which includes all the remaining IPA characters and other characters useful for linguists working on languages of the Himalayan region. This typeface may be mixed with other Times Roman faces.
- Himalb, a typeface for the Nepali alphabet.
- LTibetan, a typeface for the Tibetan alphabet.
The entire set of fonts may be downloaded as a Zip file or as a SIT file and in PC or Mac formats:
To unpack the font files from the ZIP or SIT file, you will need a utility such as WinZip® or Aladdin Expander®. Free utilities for unpacking ZIP files can be downloaded from PCWorld’s® site by clicking here.
The fingering charts for the Times Linguist, Times Linguist 2, Himalb, and LTibetan typefaces can be downloaded here as Adobe Acrobat PDF files:
- Times Linguist
- Times Linguist 2
- Himalb
- LTibetan
For PCs the way to read the fingering charts is as follows: if the character has a letter or keyboard character below it, type that character. If the character has a code below it like Alt+0224, do the following: make sure Num Lock is on [a light should go on on your keyboard], then hold down the ALT key and on the numeric keyboard [the numbered keys on the right of the keyboard] press 0224 in sequence. The desired character will appear on the screen when the font is installed and selected.
For Macs, The fonts must be installed before fingering chart is available. If the fonts are installed go to the Apple Menu Items, and click on the Key Caps application. This program allows the user to see the key combinations needed to type a character.
For PCs, in all current versions of Windows, do the following after the fonts have been unpacked from the ZIP or SIT file:
- Go to START
- Click SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL
- On the CONTROL PANEL screen click FONTS
- When the FONTS screen loads, click FILE and scroll down to INSTALL NEW FONTS.
- At the ADD FONTS screen you will need to direct the program to the location on your hard drive or floppy where you have stored the fonts.
For Macs, do the following after the fonts have been unpacked from the HQX or SIT file:
- Open the hard drive directory, Go to the SYSTEM FOLDER
- Locate the FONTS folder
- Drag the Downloaded fonts into the FONTS folder
Note: Fonts will not be recognized by a program if it is running during font installation.
